Furniture and accessories for a seaside-inspired design scheme
Many of us will head for picturesque seaside towns this summer, greeted by cheerful coastal homes, from the contemporary whitewashed beach houses to quaint seafront cottages, and the colourful Fishermans huts that line British harbours.
Whilst we recently reported on the viral 'coastal grandma' trend sweeping TikTok, coastal decor has long been established in our design lexicon. Coastal style has little to do with twee seaside references, and aligns itself more to elegant beachfront homes filled with organic materials such as jute and linen, earthy colours layered with blues and fresh whites, and yes, the occasional seashell.
Read on for 18 of the best coastal-inspired furniture and accessories, from the perfect sky blue armchair, to chic nautical-striped bed linen, and whitewashed wooden lanterns...
Blue and white stripes are a quintessential coastal pattern, historically worn by sailors, and said to make it easier to see those who had fallen overboard. Here, a deep navy stripe is printed on a super soft 100% cotton duvet cover that can be reversed to display fine grey stripes instead as your mood or the seasons change.
This Country Living lamp at Homebase is named after the famous coastal town in Cornwall and is, in our opinion, the perfect neutral table lamp. With an ivory linen shade, and highly textured ceramic body reminiscent of the rocks and shells you would come across on a breezy beach walk.
The perfect piece for a garden or trip to the beach. This striped deck chair from The White Company has a UV- and water-resistant canvas sling and weather-resistant hardwood frame – we're taking no chances with the weather. Rather cleverly, this chair will fold up into a backpack style with padded straps to transport with ease.
Whitewashed wood is a classic beach house material – whitewashing brightens the look of wood surfaces without covering any natural grain, creating the quintessential light and natural look common in coastal homes. These lanterns from Lights4Fun come with an LED candle so you can safely leave them on of an evening.
Cream Cornwall is something of a go-to for anything coastal-related. This linen fabric is one of our favourites, printed with illustrations of the oddities you would find in a rockpool. This would look brilliant as a tablecloth for outdoor dining.
Another classic stripe, this time in a cushion if you prefer your coastal references in smaller doses. Our Country Living Croyde cushion at Homebase is made from pure cotton, with a woven cover in a soft off-white and navy. It's available in red, too.
This Tarma armchair could sit happily in a country or a coastal home, such is its appealing mix of styles. The detachable tassels are pure country cottage playfulness, whilst the deep blue pattern is reminiscent of ocean plants.
Rattan is another material commonly used throughout beachfront homes, especially in this whitewashed effect. Butler's trays are something of a forgotten dinner party prop, but make a brilliant aide when entertaining – the top is removable to ferry drinks back and forth to the kitchen.
Rebecca Pitcher's online store is a treasure trove of high-quality linen pieces made in the UK and adorned with sweet illustrations and playful pattern. She has a whole section on coastal-inspired cushions, throws, and kitchen linens, one of our favourites being this ticking stripe cotton apron.
Coastal decor is really unfinished without some playful accessories, but we would err on the side of caution when picking your pieces – twee decorative seahorses or a ship in a bottle can make your home look like a seaside gift shop. Instead, go for fewer but bolder pieces, like this chunky clam dish from Rockett St George in a natural-looking resin.
Our Country Living Charlbury accent chair at DFS comes in the perfect ocean blue. This would look great dressed with a nautical striped cushion, too.
If you're an adventurous decorator, we'd recommend these saltwater linen cushions from Cream Cornwall. Printed with vintage illustrations of a starfish, a rare sand dollar, a Whelk, and a piece of bladderwrack seaweed – it would be tough to find a more fitting coastal piece.
A must-have for any keen beach goer. This navy and white parasol with pretty cotton fringe detailing and reclaimed timber pole is designed to be staked into the ground, creating 6ft of shade when open. It can easily be packed down into a matching canvas carry bag to transport with ease.
John Lewis have created a tableware collection called 'Coastal Retreat,' inspired by the sunny isles near Cornwall. This is a lot more colourful than your usual blue-and-white coastal colour combinations for something a bit more joyful and summery.
This sustainably-made wicker pendant light from Nkuku would find a happy home in any beach house. We think it would look particularly impactful as a set of three suspended over kitchen worktops or a central island.
The House Beautiful Tala rug at Carpetright was designed to reflect the many tones and shades of the ocean. Made from an ethnic wool mix with a flatweave pile, its muted colours would work wonderfully with a grey or pale wood floor.
These oven gloves (and spot the fabulous matching AGA covers too,) are printed with vintage illustrations of creatures from the deep – coastal style is nothing if not playful.
This large hurricane lamp from OKA with a fluted glass shade and distressed white stoneware base would make for a great dining table centrepiece – cluster a few of them together in different sizes complete with pillar candles for something elegant and impactful.
