With house prices in the US at an all-time high and rising, home owners and renters alike are being forced to stay put for the time being. While this must be frustrating for those of us that want to climb the property ladder, or even jump on it in the first place, there is a lot to be said for working with what you've already got.

TikTok lifestyle influencer and home-decor lover @PrestonKonrad recently went viral on the app after revealing his top tips on how to make your home look more expensive.

Some of his tips included layering rugs, choosing the right lamp shades, installing roman shades, and mixing textures and frames.

Newsweek spoke to South African designer Christian Bense, who now lives in London, and was recently featured on House & Garden's 2022 list of rising stars.

She revealed how you can make your home look more expensive with these 6 simple design tips.

Choose a rug with a pile (cut or looped) rather than a flat weave. A flat weave rug always feels a little informal and "light".

Scatter cushions with feather or down inners. Fiber or foam inners just make cushions look rigid, firm, uncomfortable and cheap. You want there to be a sense of luxuriousness to these, and having feather inners give that softness and sense of luxe.

Good picture framing is a must. 99 percent of the time a pre-framed piece of art looks worse than a re-framed piece. Where you can, always buy art unframed and spend some time getting the framing right thereafter. Good framing can make a piece of art (no matter the subject matter) look more expensive than it may be in reality, and it's the framing that ties the artwork in with the scheme, not the artwork itself. Avoid colored frames and instead go for white, black or plain wood.

Dedicated reading lamps instantly make a room feel more expensive. Where you can, pop a reading lamp next to an armchair or sofa. It gives the space that "members club vibe" like the room has been designed for you to read a book or have a glass wine under your own spotlight.

Something leather, something stone, and something lacquered. This is a great combination of materials which always makes a room feel expensive.

Crisp white bedding. Once you hit 30, colored or patterned bedding looks like you're clinging to your college days. White bedding is a classic.
